The engagement of students/future journalists in the activities of the non-profit sector
In October of 2008, the project “Engaging students in the activities of non-profit organizations” was initiated by the Agency of Social Information, with the financial support of the Citi Foundation. The program goal is to train future journalists to work with social information, taking into consideration the activities of public organizations; to create the conditions to include non-profit organizations in the circle of information sources utilized by the media, and to initiate (reinforce) partnership between universities and non-profit organizations in the field of professional education for journalists. The project will include a competition of creative works by the students, the winners of which will be awarded a trip to Moscow, for a training tour of the offices of the leading media publications. In addition, a textbook on social journalism is to be published under the academic supervision of the Periodicals Department of the Journalism Faculty at Lomonosov Moscow State University, to be distributed in Russian universities by ASI. The project will involve the following top universities: Moscow Lomonosov State University Journalism Faculty, the Urals Gorky State University Journalism Faculty, the Novgorod Lobachevskiy State University Philology Faculty Journalism Department, and the Journalism Department at St. Petersburg State University.
Involving senior-year students in the non-profit sector
In February of 2008 the Foundation for Social Development and Health, FOCUS-MEDIA, with the support of the Citi Foundation and in cooperation with non-profit organizations in Ekaterinburg, Novgorod and St. Petersburg, initiated the project “Involving senior-year students in the non-profit sector.” Under the project, events were held in each region to select students from various universities (by surveys and interviews), for whom training sessions were conducted and social projects executed, as well as non-profit project fairs, during which students could learn about the activities of local non-profit organizations. To further enhance the knowledge gained at training sessions, employees of the FOCUS-MEDIA fund developed a remote-learning course on social project planning. Upon successfully completing the training course, students are awarded a grant for the best social projects, while the best students are also awarded a trip to Moscow, to attend a training seminar.
