“Another Planet”, a national eco quest game for Russian secondary vocational school and college students, is launched

Moscow, November 1, 2018 - WWF Russia, in partnership with the ECA movement and with the support of the Citi Foundation, has announced the launch of “Another Planet”, a national quest game for student teams from Russian secondary colleges, vocational schools and academies.

This interactive project aims to give students a flavour of the world of green jobs, helping them to develop an environmental mindset and skills that will be useful in their future lives and careers. The participants will become “superheroes” as they battle to save civilization from environmental disaster and to turn the Earth into “another” planet, where people live in harmony with nature. The quest will run until April 15, 2019.

“Russia today has a host of environmental problems: logging of valuable forests, rare animal poaching, urban air pollution, garbage.... No longer is the environment ‘someone else’s problem’: environmental practices are becoming part of every aspect of our lives —at home or at work. Our quest game will help students to obtain an armory of knowledge and skills that will help them to be more successful and employable in their future lives and careers”, said WWF Russia Director Igor Chestin.

Participants can put teams together via the project’s web portal, квестдругаяпланета.рф, and will perform 30 assignments on 10 topical environmental themes, including ecological footprint reduction, biodiversity conservation, sustainable forest management, water conservation, energy efficiency, responsible waste management, green jobs of the future, and so on. For each theme, the participants will be able to take part in webinars featuring successful representatives of green jobs from different industries and fields.

“Today, the environmental agenda is still underappreciated in Russia, but in many countries around the world it is already key to economic and social development. For 21st century society, transitioning to sustainable development will be the main goal, so the environmental sphere will be one of the most promising sectors of employment in future. The green jobs market is now starting to grow rapidly, and those who join it first will gain huge competitive advantages”, said Professor Pavel Luksha, from the Moscow School of Management Skolkovo, who has co-authored a report entitled “Skills of the future: How to thrive in the complex new world”.

“For the past 16 years, the Citi Foundation in Russia has supported a whole range of social programs and initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for low-income people, and at urban development,” said Anna Samokhvalova, Public Affairs Director at Citibank. “The ‘Another Planet’ project, of which we are a partner, is unique, as it focuses on environmental thinking and eco jobs of the future. We are sure that the project will give students at Russian colleges, vocational schools and academies the opportunity to learn more about future green jobs, as well as to preserve and improve the urban environment and our planet”.

The five winning teams and their teachers will be invited to an environmental conference in Moscow, where they will be able to take part in educational activities and master classes, as well as mini internships at the project’s partner organizations. The members of the top 20 teams will be awarded practical eco prizes. All the participating teams will receive diplomas and certificates of gratitude for taking part.

Citibank introduces new way of payment — Pay with select points

Moscow. Citibank launched a new way of paying for a taxi with bonus points («selects») accumulated on Citi Select® credit card.

The newly introduced Citibank service, Pay with Select Points allows Citi Select credit card holders to pay for taxi rides with bonus points. Once the ride is paid with Citi Select credit card, an SMS with a one-time generated link will be sent to the mobile number linked to the bank account. Clicking the link will take the client to the web page that shows the total number of bonus points available. There, the client can select how many points he or she wants to use to pay for the ride in full or partially by simply dragging a slider along the points scale.

«The new service allows our clients to use bonus points as a full-fledged means of payment. What makes it even better is that they can be so easily used to pay for a taxi, one of the most popular services among our clients,» Michael Berner, Consumer Business Manager, Board Member at Citibank commented on the new offer. «Regardless of what taxi service or application the client uses, there is always an opportunity to get the fare reimbursed with accumulated bonus points, and it can be done quickly and effortlessly.»

Once the bonus points are redeemed, the fare amount will be refunded to the credit card account within 5 days. The minimum fare amount that can be fully paid with bonus points is 100 rubles.

The link is available for 24 hours after the SMS has been received. The bonus points (selects) can be used for multiple rides per day under the condition that the points for the earlier ride have already been redeemed. Otherwise, the next SMS will be sent after 7 days.

Citi GPS Study: a New Perspective on Recycling Plastic

Russia – Citi has released its new Global Perspectives & Solutions report focused on the key trends in plastic recycling and reuse, based on fundamental changes in the behavioural stereotypes of modern consumers worldwide.

Citi analysts came to a number of main conclusions in their study and made predictions based on each of them.

  1. Conclusion: the most common source of plastic resin, used in packaging, is polyethylene, which has been degraded for hundreds of years.
    Forecast: financial incentives for companies producing biodegradable plastic will facilitate perfection of the technology.
  2. Conclusion: for the past 20 years there has been a trend of local restrictions in plastic use.
    Forecast: China’s ban on the import of solid waste has had quite a considerable impact on the industry.
  3. Conclusion: only 14% of plastic is recycled, the remaining 86% is disposed at landfills.
    Forecast: the technology for converting plastic into biofuel by means of waste gasification and using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) will increase recycling efficiency.

According to the research, each year the world produces about 400 million tonnes of plastic, over a third of which is used for production of packaging. The value of the global market for plastic production has exceeded a trillion dollars in 2016, and by 2020 this figure will increase to 1.2 trillion dollars. For the last 50 years, plastic packaging has become an indispensable part of daily life, and the debate of its sustainable use is ongoing in the US and Europe. Nevertheless China, making up 50% of the market for this type of waste disposal (8 million tonnes per annum), took a firm stance in 2018 and refused to accept foreign waste containing plastic. This led to a collapse in plastic recovery prices and a waste overflow in western ports. In response, Great Britain, the EU and many developing countries introduced their own domestic bans and restrictions in the area of plastic production and recycling.

From the 1950s, the volume of plastic production increased by 8% (CAGR) per annum. This superior soft and rigid plastic had become predominant worldwide and should in time replace traditional packaging.

Today only 14% of plastic is sent to be recycled (a mere 2% of which is recycled successfully), and the remaining 86% is disposed of in various, not always environmentally friendly ways.

Cost remains an important factor: a tonne of recycled plastic costs $226, which makes it less profitable than aluminium, which has a cost of $1,186 per tonne, seeing as the recirculation rate for aluminium cans amounts to 50%, whereas for example that of PET is only 30%.

Among the key opportunities for the optimisation and development of plastic recycling and reuse, the following areas were highlighted by the researchers:

  • the use of lighter plastics, including the replacement of rigid containers with biodegradable plastic bags and the promotion of reusable plastic bottles;
  • the standardization of recycling stages and their cost to increase liquidity;
  • the increase of PET production volume and using them to manufacture beverages.

The full text of the study and graphs are available via the link.
